Frequently Asked Questions

A Specialist Wellness Counsellor is like a highly-trained life and wellbeing expert, think of them as a “GP for your mind and emotions” who holds a postgraduate university degree (that’s at least four years of study) and over 100 hours of hands-on practice before they can work with clients.

I don’t just focus on you in isolation; I use a “systems approach,” which means I look at the bigger picture of your life; your family, friends, school, work, and environment. All of those pieces affect how you feel.

My goal is to help you feel whole and balanced by caring about your physical health (body), your thoughts and feelings (mind), and your values or sense of purpose (spirit). I am a “first stop” for everyday struggles like stress, grief, or relationship issues, and if I sense you need more serious help, I will safely guide you to a psychologist or doctor who specialises in that area.

  • What I handle:I’m here for everyday life challenges like stress, relationship issues, grief, study habits, lifestyle choices, trauma debriefing, HIV/AIDS support, substance abuse, workplace adaptation, and coping with major life changes like retirement or disability.
  • What I don’t do: I do not perform psychotherapy, social work, medical treatment, or occupational therapy, so I do not diagnose illnesses, prescribe medication, or treat serious mental disorders.
  • I am a first line of support: I work at the primary health care level, meaning I’m here for common, day-to-day struggles before things become severe.
  • I must refer when needed:If I sense your issues go beyond my training (like signs of severe mental health conditions or medical problems), I am professionally required to stop counselling and refer you to a doctor, psychologist, social worker, or psychiatrist for specialised help.

When would you refer me to someone else?

No. Medical aids do not cover sessions with ASCHP (Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners) registered practitioners

I always tailor the process to fit you, not the other way around. Every person is different, so the number of sessions you might need really depends on your unique situation and what you hope to achieve. On average, I find that most clients benefit from around 6 to 8 sessions.

All sessions are payable in advance.  You can use instant EFT or Payfast.  You will receive an invoice via e-mail.
